Program Overview:

The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is a globally recognised qualification designed for managers, supervisors, health and safety personnel, and individuals seeking to establish a career in occupational health and safety. It provides knowledge that can be applied across industries and workplaces worldwide.

The program develops participants’ ability to understand health and safety responsibilities, support effective management systems, assess workplace risks, and recommend suitable control measures. It also addresses safety culture, human factors, contractor management, incident investigation, emergency arrangements, and the monitoring and review of health and safety performance.

Participants examine physical, psychological, musculoskeletal, chemical, biological, fire, electrical, and equipment related hazards. The qualification combines management knowledge with a practical workplace risk assessment, enabling participants to translate their learning into safer working conditions and stronger organizational performance.

Qualification Structure:

The program follows the current NEBOSH specification and consists of two units.

Unit GIC1 Management of Health and Safety:

Reasons for managing workplace health and safety.

Performance monitoring, auditing, and review.

Unit GIC2 Risk Assessment:

Physical and psychological health hazards.
Musculoskeletal health risks.
Chemical and biological agents.
General workplace hazards.
Work equipment risks.
Fire hazards.
Electrical hazards.

Assessment:

Participants must successfully complete both assessment units to achieve the NEBOSH International General Certificate. The assessment process measures both health and safety knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge within workplace situations.

Unit	Assessment Format	Main Requirements
GIC1	Scenario based open book examination	Apply health and safety knowledge to a workplace scenario and complete a closing interview about the submitted work.
GIC2	Practical workplace risk assessment	Identify hazards and affected groups, evaluate existing controls, recommend further controls, and produce an action plan.

GIC1 Assessment and Grading

GIC1 is a five-hour scenario-based open-book examination. Learners receive digital access to the assessment for a 24-hour submission window. A closing interview forms part of the assessment process and requires learners to discuss their submission.

GIC2 Practical Assessment

GIC2 assesses the learner’s ability to complete a suitable workplace risk assessment and develop an action plan. The unit is graded as Pass or Refer and does not contribute to the final qualification grade.

NEBOSH-appointed external examiners mark both assessments. Learners must pass GIC1 and GIC2 within five years of passing their first unit. The qualification parchment is issued after both units have been completed successfully.
